The Creation of a Gay Icon: From Dorothy Gale to Judy Garland

As a 20-something year old gay man, I've often heard older gay men idolize the Wizard of Oz and Judy Garland. In this short documentary I explore the significance of the Wizard of Oz to gay men, the meaning of the phrase "friend of Dorothy", and the rise of Judy Garland as a gay icon. 

CHICAGO RED DRESS PARTY 2012 | SEPTEMBER 21, 2012

The Chicago Red Dress Party opened it's doors for the second annual event to over 250 guest. The event was held in Downtown Chicago at the Joffrey Ballet Studios. Good Morning America Meteorologist Ginger Zee and actor and model Christian Carabias hosted the festivities. Beverly McClellan from NBC's The Voice provided a stunning musical performance. Stonewall Forty EqualitYoga | June 27, 2009

To acknowledge the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, over 400 yogis and yoginis joined together to increase social consciousness for LGBT equality. Washington State Senator Ed Murray set the tone by discussing the progression of the equality movement. The class was led by Troy Lucero, Maygen McGrew and Matt Meko. Musical accompaniment provided by Steve Gold and Gina Sala. Produced in partnership with Genessa Krasnow.

THE VISIT OF HIS HOLINESS XIV, DALAI LAMA | April 26, 2012

Sean Penn, Academy-award winner and Peace Summit Activist awardee, began the day with a message centered around service as he introduced His Holiness XIV, the Dalai Lama. His Holiness discussed the ideas of personal inter peace as a means to find world peace and about the necessity for interfaith cooperation. Produced in partnership with Casey Allison, Rebecca Grimm, Stephen Rastberger, Quinn Riley, and Richard Williams and countless volunteers.

CHICAGO RED DRESS PARTY 2011 | April 16, 2011

The Chicago Red Dress Party was a labor of love for Kyler. He founded the charitable event to raise visibility and awareness for HIV/AIDS. Funds from the event were granted to organizations providing vital community services. The first annual Chicago Red Dress Party was hosted by Candace Jordan and Marcus Riley and featured musical guest Kristine W. Over 200 people were in attendance.

Red Hot Runway | April 9, 2011

To increase awareness for the first Chicago Red Dress party Kyler teamed up with the Public Relations Student Association at Columbia University. The students created and marketed a competition based fashion show, Red Hot Runway. The university's fashion students created custom red dresses inspired by their ideas surrounding HIV/AIDS. The top three dresses were displayed in the 900 Shops on Michigan Avenue for one month leading up the the Chicago Red Dress Party.

Proposition 8 Oral Arguments | March 5, 2009

After directing the Seattle March for Marriage Equality Kyler became increasing involved in the legal proceedings of California Proposition 8. On March 4, 2009 he flew to San Francisco, CA to participate in a rally and march to City Hall. The following day he attended the California Supreme Court oral argument proceedings.
